(BEDFORD) - Bedford officials are charting a compromise that will allow people access to property off the west side of Mitchell Road near Washington Park.
In November, Dwain Shipman and Peggy Sue Mitchell, both of Abel Avenue, asked the council to vacate the property.
Shipman told the council he acquired the property long ago from his father-in-law, who assured him he could build a home and a driveway there. After the driveway was built, Shipman, say, his father-in-law later told him there might be a problem with that the driveway was built on city property.
The council in November was reluctant to vacate the property and decided they needed to visit the property and have city attorney Greg Pittman looking into the issue.
Pittman told the council they could grant an easement to the residents across the city owned property. The easement would allow them to accomplish their goals, but would allow the city to reclaim the property if it ever decided to develop streets or use the land.
The city council does not have the power to grant an easement, but they did vote to recommend the board of works grant it when they meet on Monday.
In another property issue, council members also accepted a new street onto the city's list. The deed for Fellowship Drive, which connects Glen Meadows Parkway and Heltonville Road, was dedicated to the city.
