Last updated on Wednesday, December 12, 2012

(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested Tuesday night and charged with dealing methamphetamine.

26-year-old Michael Cooper was booked into the Lawrence County Security Center at 7:10 p.m. on charges of dealing meth, maintaining a common nuisance, possessions of precursors and possession of marijuana and a schedule IV controlled substance.

According to a probable cause affidavit police were called to a home in the 1000 block of 25th Street in August after a neighbor complained of a strong chemical odor.

Officers recognized the odor that is emitted when someone makes or "cooks" methamphetamine, according to the document. The odor was determined to be coming from the cellar or basement area of Cooper's home.

The door to the area was locked, but police could see through large gaps between the door and foundation and saw items, a cooler, plastic tubing, glass mason jars and other items used to make the drug.

An 18-year-old female answered the door and told police she lived there with Cooper, according to the document. She continued to tell officers there was a meth lab in the basement and that another man, with assistance from Cooper were making the meth. She also told officers there was marijuana and pills in the home.

She has not been charged in the incident.

Police obtained a search warrant and with the Indiana State Police Meth Suppression team searched and removed the items.

In addition to materials used to make meth, police found meth, marijuana and alprazolam, a Schedule IV controlled substance.

Parsley said the investigation is ongoing.
