(MITCHELL) - Mitchell High School still does not have a baseball coach. Monday night high school and corporation administrators recommended that Todd Tanksley, a former MHS and Franklin College baseball player and MHS head football coach, be hired for the position that had long been held by Gary Seitzinger.
Mike Lewis of the Times-Mail reports that Tanksley had the support of both Assistant Superintendent Phil Storm and MHS Principal Sean Vandeventer, but the board rejected a motion to hire Tanksley by a 3-2 margin.
Debra Beeler and Christopher Shaw voted in favor. Jamie Kirk, Michele Super and Marnie LaFevor voted against.
There was no discussion at the time and the board moved on to other business. But as the meeting wound down, Kyle Enlow, one of several people in the audience, whose son is a senior and baseball player, asked board members for an explanation.
Michele Super says she voted against the motion because she feels Tanksley needs to be 100 percent committed to his assistant principal's position at the junior high school. She noted that Jennifer Caruso is a new principal and has made progress at that building but needs Tanskley's support.
Kirk agreed, adding that the school corporation has not called upon principals and assistant principals to carry a coach's duties as well, Kirk added the position was posted on Mitchell's website, but it was not posted as widely as other varsity coaching positions.
LaFevor concurred with Super and Kirk's remarks and had "no further comment."
Enlow and other adults connected to the baseball program want the board to take action quickly and some believe the board is ignoring their needs.
In the end, the board instructed administrators to post the opening again. Board members hope to name a coach next month, perhaps calling a special meeting to do so if necessary.
