(BEDFORD) - Parkview Intermediate School will help kick off a day full of Christmas gift-buying opportunities Saturday when the students host the school’s annual Arts and Crafts Festival.
Recognizing that many other craft-themed events are scheduled for that day, PVI art teacher Tracy Isom asked Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis to proclaim Nov. 10 "Arts and Crafts Day." Girgis turned that request into a reality on Wednesday at PVI.
PVI students are putting the final touches on handmade items for the festival, which will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"Our students and parents have been working on ornaments that will be sold on our festival tree," Isom wrote in an email message. "When we started our festival three years ago our goal was not only to support our school but to bring an awareness to our community of our many local craftsmen and artists."
Nearly 60 vendors will participate.
Isom said proceeds from the event will help fund a variety of school projects.
"Our festival has continually grown, and we have a wide representation of what people in Lawrence County can make and sell," he said. "Our students are making paper fish and snowflakes (and) parents and students are making tissue tube fish at home to go on the hall tree. ... We will be selling these fish at the festival ... and the profit ... goes to our accelerated reading program, which is a program designed to encourage students to read.
"The money raised by the table rent from our vendors goes to the Parkview Intermediate PTO to furnish items needed by the students."
Available at the school will be wooden Christmas trees, grapevine items, jewelry and scarves, dog treats, Christmas crafts, knitted and crocheted items, Thirty-one and Tupperware products, books, rubber stamps, handmade jar lamps and peanut Christmas birds. A caricature artist also will be on hand.
