Man Becomes Combative Breaks Out Window At Police Station

Last updated on Saturday, November 17, 2012

(BEDFORD) - 27-year-old Dustin Couch, of Springville was arrested after Bedford Police officers stopped his vehicle at the intersection of 17th and L streets Thursday night.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, Couch was driving erratically and that is why officers made the traffic stop.

"He was brought to the station for a chemical test," Parsley says. "But he would not cooperate with officers and give an adequate test. So officers were going to transport him to a local hospital for a blood draw."

That is when Couch became combative.

"They were taking him out to the patrol car and he began shoving and jerking away from officers," Parsley says. "They got him to the lobby area and that is when he began ramming into the walls and doors and shattered the glass in the front door."

Officers then had to physically place Couch into the police car and took him to IU Health for a blood test.

"Once there he still was being combative and running into the doors and walls in the emergency room," Parsley says. "He had to be physically restrained."

Couch was charged with operating a vehicle pending the results of the blood test, operating a vehicle while impaired, resisting arrest by force, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.

"We will be asking the prosecutor's office to seek restitution for the broken glass in the front door," Parsley says.
