(BEEVILLE, TX) - There’s something about speed, really fast speed, that appeals to former Linton resident Jennifer Robertson.
Nick Schneider of the Greene County Daily World reports that Robertson thrives blazing down a flat one-mile stretch of pavement on a motorcycle.
Robertson, who spent her early life in Greene County with her parents Roger and Cathy Robertson before moving to Center Point, Texas and becoming a high school guidance counselor.
On Oct. 27, she set a world record for the mile with a blistering speed of 243.6 mph riding a borrowed Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle built by Johnny "Cheese" Mortellaro, of Round Rock, Texas. She set the record at Chase Field in Beeville, Texas beating the old record by one-tenth of a second.
"I'm not sure I could put the feeling into words or if there are even words to describe it. All I can say is that I have been on 230 mph passes that were almost peaceful, but this pass was not. Third gear did not cooperate, and there was a cross wind at the top end that caused me to drift toward the cones. I had to back off the throttle in fifth gear to control the head shake and keep from sliding into the cones. I believe a clean pass would have been closer to 260 mph," she said in a prepared statement.
Robertson set her sights on attempting to break the world mark after she and her father became the first father-daughter team to top the 200 mph mark.
Jennifer completed her standing mile run with a 216 mph mark while her dad hit 210 mph.
At the time the record was only 222 mph, but when she got ready for the run, someone else got to it first.
It took five years before she actually attempted to break the mark in late October.
Robertson said it was important for her to break the record in Texas so her dad, who's been in poor health recently, could witness the feat.
The racer owns other records:
* The fastest time for a female for a quarter-mile distance on a street bike at 9.23 seconds at Hawaii Raceway Park.
* The fastest quarter-mile time for a female on a street bike at San Antonio Raceway at 8.93 seconds.
* Fastest female at Loring Raceway at 231.6 mph.
Robertson's uncle, Charles Seaton, of rural Linton, says he's proud of his niece and admits she likes thrills a lot more than he does.
"That's too fast for me," he confided. "I don't know how she does it."
