Healthy Thanksgiving Day Tips

Last updated on Thursday, November 22, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - It’s Thanksgiving Day, a time to spend time with your family, give thanks for all you have, and then eat lots of delicious food that probably isn’t all that great for you in the long run.

So, what can you do to make Thanksgiving a little healthier in your house?

Dr. Yazid Fadl an IU Health Cardiologist has a few tips. He says drink lots of water or non-sugary, non-caffeinated beverages during the meal. Fadl also says starting with a salad is the smart choice, because it helps you fill up on something healthy, leaving you less space in your stomach for gravy.

The timing of a meal is also important to Dr. Fadl, who says the earlier you eat, the better. He compares the Thanksgiving meal to a road trip. He says fill your tank before your day winds down, so you aren't sleeping on a full tummy.

Fadl says the more time you give yourself to work off the meal, the more calories you'll burn for gravy.
