Drugs And Alcohol Factors In Salem Crash

(SALEM) - A single vehicle crash October 25th sent a Salem man to St. Vincent Salem Hospital for treatment of possible head trauma.

Stephanie Taylor Ferriell of the Leader-Democrat reports that Scottie R. Sowder, 33, 4106 E. Canton Rd., had a BAC of .16; twice Indiana's legal limit, according to a report by Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Joe Keltner. The report says that Sowder also tested positive for marijuana and another drug.

The crash, reported at 7:15 p.m., occurred when Sowder, who was westbound on Cox Ferry Road, ran off the road and struck a utility pole. The crash was near the Nubian Road intersection.

Sowder was not wearing a seat belt.

He was driving a white 1991 Oldsmobile Royale 88, registered to a Salem woman.

After he was treated at St. Vincent, Sowder was arrested on OWI charges and transported to the Washington County Detention Center.

Also responding were the Salem Fire Department and Washington County Ambulance Service.
