Department Of Labor Says Take Precautions During Black Friday Sales

Last updated on Tuesday, November 20, 2012

(UNDATED) - The Indiana Department of Labor is encouraging retailers to take precautions to ensure employees and shoppers are safe during “Black Friday” sales and other major shopping days.

The department says a lack of adequate crowd management was to blame when a retail worker in New York was killed in 2008 when shoppers rushed through the doors. The Labor Department says other workers are injured each year.

The Department of Labor recommends retailers adequately prepare by using crowd management planning, including setting up line markers or barricades if needed.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends using trained security or police for crowd control, using signs to inform customers of main door locations and opening times and using raffles, armbands or tickets for highly-sought after items.
