Dan Bortner Elected To National Association Of State Park Directors

Last updated on Tuesday, November 6, 2012

(UNDATED) - Dan Bortner, director of the DNR Division of State Parks & Reservoirs, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors for the National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD).

The organization is composed of 50 state park directors, plus territories of the United States, and is devoted to helping states effectively manage and administer their state park systems. There are nearly 6,000 state parks in the United States covering more than 13 million acres with annual visitation topping 730 million people.

"It's always humbling to be nominated by your peers to a leadership position," Bortner said. "But this is less about me and more about the success Indiana has had in operating our wonderful system of state parks.

"The dedicated men and women charged with maintaining the delicate balance between conservation and recreation are the ones who make Indiana's state parks and reservoirs so successful."

Bortner will represent the NASPD's eight-state North Central Region that also includes Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

A lifelong Hoosier who lives with his wife and children in his hometown of Bedford, Bortner received a bachelor's degree in public affairs from Indiana University in 1987. He spent 18 years in the private sector in human resources and is a certified senior professional in human resources management. Bortner joined the DNR in March 2005 as human resources director and became director of State Parks & Reservoirs four months later.

Indiana's State Parks & Reservoirs division manages 24 parks and eight reservoirs that annually attract more than 15 million visitors. They offer a range of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, boating, fishing, picnicking and more.
