(STATEHOUSE) - Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) today appointed State Sen. Brent Steele (R-Bedford) as chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary for the 118th General Assembly.
The 2013 legislative session will be Steele's first time to lead this panel. Formerly, he served as chair of the Committee on Corrections, Civil & Criminal Matters.
"I am honored to receive this appointment, leading the committee responsible for ensuring Indiana's judicial system is working to effectively uphold justice for all Hoosiers," said Steele, a practicing attorney in Bedford. "My experience practicing law for more than 40 years will aid me considerably in this effort and allow me to lend common sense to any new laws or legal issues that may arise this session."
Steele said his committee will consider legislation relating to Indiana's courts, the legal professions, criminal and civil law and procedure, law enforcement, personal rights, estate and probate law and administrative code. Long said he's confident Steele's experience makes him the perfect fit as chairman.
"Senator Steele brings a unique professional and personal experience to the Senate that qualifies him to lead his colleagues in related policy discussions," Long said. "Our state legislature is very fortunate to have the opportunity to tap into his expertise, using it to make Indiana a better place to live, work and raise a family."
The 2013 legislative session ceremonially kicks off with "Organization Day" on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Legislators will reconvene Jan. 7 and may work until April 29 to draft a two-year state budget and other new laws.
