BNL Cheerleaders To Compete In State Cheer Championship Saturday

Last updated on Friday, November 2, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders from Bedford North Lawrence High School will compete Saturday in the Indiana Cheer Championship state finals.

According to Lori Cummings, cheerleader sponsor, the two squads will combine to compete as one squad with hopes of being named the top group in Class 4A.

The squad is one of 15 squads in Class 4A that advanced to state when 25 groups competed at the regional level Saturday at Pendleton Heights High School.

The state finals will take place at Southport High School with BNL performing at 1:07 p.m.

To compete, cheerleaders are required to perform a 2 and a half-minute routine that must include at least four tumbling passes, three stunts and four different jumps, along with a dance portion and a cheer portion. Cheerleaders are judged on difficulty and execution in each area.

Cummings said BNL consistently competed in statewide competitions during the 1990s and won at state in 1992, 1994 and 1996. Beginning in about 2000, BNL opted not to participate, but entered the competition again last year and advanced to state. The team finished 13th, but Cummings said this year's group is optimistic about placing in the top five.

The squad consists of 21 girls. Joining Taylor, Watkins and Kovacs in the competition will be Makenzie East, Peyton Flynn, Dallas Hutchinson, Schlar Hewitt, Alaina McFadden, Katie Burton, Carlee Tackett, Josie Roberts, Bailey Cooper, Cassidy Tackett, Taylor Lackey, Maryellen Spreen, Sydney Corbin, Lexi Stewart, Abby Parsley and Caitlyn Mefford.

Cummings said two cheerleaders, Sadie Mikels and Lauren Thomas, are injured and cannot compete.

The freshman squad will not compete at state, but Cummings said the team did compete in a contest at Pendleton Heights High School in September and placed first. The contest was not a qualifying round for the state competition.
