Bids Sought On New Gym Floors At Three North Lawrence Schools

Last updated on Tuesday, November 20, 2012

(BEDFORD) - The North Lawrence School board voted unanimously to allow Director of Maintenance Steve Ritter permission to seek bids for replacing the gym floors at Lincoln Elementary, Needmore Elementary and Parkview Primary schools.

Ritter told the board that after 20 to 30 years the rubber floors have bubbled causing flaws in the floor. In some places, these types of artificial gym floors were found to contain dangerous heavy metals, like mercury. But the floors at the schools were tested and no heavy metals were found.

Ritter would like to replace the rubber floors with traditional hardwood gym floors.

The state has not approved the school system's budget for next year. Ritter told the board the bids could be accepted contingent upon approval from the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.
