(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Fire Department and the city’s board of works honored firefighter Neil Riley Monday afternoon.
Riley was off duty and doing construction work on White Lane when he noticed a commotion up the road where a Duke Energy crew was working.
Riley went to assist.
There he found 60-year-old Kelly "Dee" Meadows collapsed and not breathing. Meadows later passed away at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.
"There is not a man on this department that would not of stopped and gave assistance," Riley says. "I knew there was a problem and did what I needed to do."
Duke Energy wrote a letter to BFD Chief Jon Wagner and the city, praising Riley for his dedication and assistance in aiding Meadows.
That letter and a letter of commendation was placed in Riley's personnel file.
In other business:
The board accepted the bid from Spillman System, in Utah, to provide the Bedford Police Department with public safety software for their computer-aided dispatch and records management system. The bid was for $295,188.
The board was going to accept, open and review bids for the transit building project, but there was a discrepancy on the plans for the roof. So the city decided to amend the description and rebid the project. Bids will be accepted on Monday, November 26th until 1:30 p.m. The board will then vote to award the bid on Tuesday, November 27th during a special board of works meeting at 1:30 p.m.
The board approved a contract with McIntyre Brothers to perform the quarterly inspections on the city's ten emergency tornado warning sirens and provide maintenance on the system. The contract will cost the city $4,560 annually. Kern Electrical held the contract, but Richard Kern has since retired, thus the city asked McIntyre Brothers to do the inspections and maintenance.
The board approved the White River Humane Society agreement for 2013. The agreement is for $25,000 a year.
