(BEDFORD) - 7-year-old Savanna Hammonds, of Bedford, was flown by helicopter to Riley Children’s Hospital after she ran into the path of truck Wednesday night while trick-or-treating.
According to a Bedford Police report, Hammonds was on L Street near Bedford Laserwash when she ran onto L Street into the path of a 1997 Chevrolet pick-up truck, driven by 73-year-old Janet Pierce, of Bedford. Police say the girl was with her family when she dashed into the roadway.
Pierce, who was traveling south on L Street, told police she did not see the girl and says she didn't know what she had hit until she stopped.
Police say several witnesses to the accident say Pierce was not speeding and the girl ran into the path of the truck.
Hammonds suffered facial and head injuries and was transported by ambulance to IU Health Hospital and then flown by helicopter to Riley. She was later released.
