WonderLab Event To Highlight Candy Making

Last updated on Friday, October 12, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - The WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology in partnership with Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard will present a special holiday-themed workshop Sunday.

The workshop, titled 'Savory Science: Tricks About Treats', will last from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The workshop will teach participants about the science behind making candy with an emphasis about natural sweeteners.

Staci Radford-Vincent, program and outreach manager at WonderLab, said the museum always tries focusing on nutrition.

"WonderLab is always emphasizing health and wellness, from the snacks and foods we offer for purchase at the museum, to the topics of a wide variety of programs," she said. "This workshop, in particular, always focuses on how to create healthy and tasty alternatives to processed foods that are full of chemicals, salt, fat and calories are devoid of much nutrition."

Radford-Vincent also said the workshop will help people make better choices about what kinds of foods they consume.

"It was created to promote not only healthy eating and nutrition, but to also help people understand the science behind healthy eating, the differences between processed and whole foods and also the food science such as the anatomy between 'whole grain' versus 'processed grain,' such as white flour," she said.

Radford-Vincent said participants can learn some valuable skills at the workshop. She said people can learn new techniques and recipes to try in their own kitchens. Every household will receive a candy thermometer to take home.

The workshop was made possible by a grant from the Precision Health Network Fund of the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County, Inc.

Advance registration is encouraged for those who want to attend the workshop. To register, participants are encouraged to call (812) 337-1337 ext. 11. The workshop costs $5 for WonderLab members and $8 plus museum admission for nonmembers.
