Surgery Cancelled For Man Injured In GM Accident

Last updated on Friday, October 12, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Brian Gilbert, who was injured after being crushed in the mechanisms of a scissor lift at GM, was scheduled for surgery Thursday.

But that surgery was postponed because of his condition.

Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner says the accident at Bedford's GM Casting Plant left Gilbert critically injured.

Wagner says, Gilbert, of Oolitic, was caught in the mechanisms of a scissor lift across the chest and shoulder area.

Gilbert was freed before Bedford firefighters arrived and emergency crews were performing life saving efforts on Gilbert.

Firefighters helped load Gilbert into a waiting ambulance and he was taken to a helicopter and flown to a Louisville hospital.

Family and friends say Gilbert was scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday afternoon to repair damage to his pelvis and have a spine infusion surgery, but those operations were cancelled because of Gilbert's condition.

The second man injured was Emerson "Preston" Hall.

Wagner says Hall suffered serious injuries but they were not life-threatening.

"Mr. Hall was in much better shape than Brian," Wagner says. "Paramedics were breathing for Brian when they left the scene."

Robert Wheeler, communications manager at GM Detroit, says no other details about the accident were available. A health and safety team is investigating the accident.
