While families prepare for a night out of hunting for candy and festivities, local authorities want to remind families of safety tips.
Officials stressed trick-or-treaters should only visit homes with the porch lights on. Those residents not willing to participate are asked to keep their porch lights off.
Parents should always check candy acquired from homes they do not know just to be safe.
"We have not had problems with that, and we want to keep it that way," says Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley.
Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig says families should take caution when getting ready for Halloween by ensuring there is reflective gear or identifiers on their children as they go from house to house.
Most importantly, police stressed, is drivers should be cautious when driving during the trick-or-treating hours due to dark costumes and children running around.
"Drivers need to be cautious. There will be a lot of goblins and ghosts running around, and probably a lot of dark clothing," Parsley said.
Extra patrols will be on duty and anyone caught speeding will be cited to prevent any accidents.
