Starstrong Donut-A-Thon Will Be Nov. 17th

Last updated on Friday, October 26, 2012

(BEDFORD) - It was silly, it was fun and it’s back. The Starstrong Donut-a-thon 5K For a Cure will take place Nov. 17 at 9 a.m. on the Bedford North Lawrence campus.

Carol Johnson of the Times-Mail reports that the run/walk is a fundraiser for Starstrong, a student organization that raises money and awareness for cancer organizations.

Leisa Deckard, Starstrong advisor, says nearly 200 people participated in the 2011 inaugural Donut-a-thon raising more than $3,000.

Proceeds from this year's run/walk will be divided among Riley Hospital for Children, Make a Wish Foundation and Cookies for Kids' Cancer, which supports pediatric cancer research.

Deckard says she started Starstrong after hearing from many students whose family members had been diagnosed with cancer and BNL students coping with their own diagnosis.

About 40 students are involved in the organization.

Those in the Donut -a-thon can be a:

Challenger: Run half the race, eat a dozen donuts, then finish race, one-hour time limit.

Challenger team: Two-person team. One person runs half the race, teammate eats the donuts, and runner finishes the race.

Slacker: Run or walk, get a box of donuts halfway through and finish the race carrying the box with you. No time limit.

Cheerleader: Show up, support the cause, get donuts and T-shirt. The 5K is open to anyone.
