(BEDFORD) - Leadership Lawrence County paid special tribute to Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman Wednesday afternoon.
Commissioner Dave Flinn presented Skillman with a proclamation declaring October 10th Becky Skillman Day. City Council President Byron Buker presented Skillman with a street sign after the council changed the name of Plaza Drive North to Becky Skillman Way, and Mayor Shawna Girgis presented Skillman with a limestone key to the city.
Skillman was honored at a reception at the Lawrence County History Museum.
The museum was packed with family, friends and fellow elected officials sharing memories and laughter.
Bedford was Skillman's final stop on her Hoosier Crossroads Tour.
Senator Brent Steele shared stories of his time in government with Skillman admiring her humble attitude, honesty and dedication. The crowd shared laughter as Steele shared a story of Skillman's driving a golf cart at the speed of sound and throwing Steele and a cooler full of drinks and ice from the cart while avoiding a sink hole.
"She was the right person at the right place at the right time," Steele says about Skillman's time in office. "Indiana is a better place because of Becky Skillman. She has always had her eye on the ball, a higher realm then anyone else. She has served the public for over 34 years. ...What ever she does, will be done in the Becky Skillman way."
Skillman was overwhelmed by the turnout.
"I had no idea this was going to happen today," Skillman says. "I can't thank everyone enough for your great support since I started my career. The citizens of Lawrence County though the years offered support and prayers along the way...I am very pleased to leave my small thumb print on this state."
