Indiana State Police Troopers Honored For Service

Last updated on Thursday, October 11, 2012

(UNDATED) - Indiana State Police Lieutenant Rusty Garrison, Master Trooper Dan Hearon and Trooper Kent Rohlfing were recognized for their acts of service.

The idea for this event was first conceived by the Superintendent, Dr. Paul Whitesell. He, along with others he consulted, determined there was a need to publicly recognize the achievements, deeds of self-sacrifice and accomplishments that all too often go without proper recognition. This led to the first recognition event that was held on February 22, 2006.

Garrison was given the Life Saving Award for his actions on July 13, 2012. Garrison was eating lunch with the Recruit Academy staff and recruits when he saw several recruits pointing at a fellow recruit.

Recruit Sweatt was holding his hands up to his throat indicating he was choking.

Garrison then saw one of the other recruits perform the Heimlich maneuver on Sweatt with no success.

Garrison grabbed Sweatt and performed the Heimlich maneuver, which partially dislodged the obstruction.

Garrison then stopped and realized Sweatt was getting almost no air.

Again Garrison performed the Heimlick and the obstruction was dislodged, but again blocked Sweatt's airway.

Garrison performed the Heimlich maneuver a third time, at which time cleared Sweatt's airway.

Master Trooper Daniel Hearon

Master Trooper Daniel Hearon was given his Life Saving Award for his actions on January 1st.

Hearon was off duty and eating dinner with his wife at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant in Plainfield, when a 90-year-old woman began choking at the table just beside him.

Hearon realized that the female was not breathing. He performed abdominal thrusts which resulted in the woman's airway being cleared.

As an additional act of kindness, Hearon attempted to buy the victim and her family their meals.

Trooper Kent Rohlfing

Factors used to determine the "Trooper of the District" included, but were not limited to, traffic and criminal enforcement, community involvement and specialty assignments such as SCUBA, ERT, Meth Lab Team, Instructor ratings, or other services performed for the department beyond normal expectations.
