(BEDFORD) - A new program has begun in Lawrence County that will provide limited, immediate legal help to those who can’t afford an attorney.
Adrian Polit, an attorney who helps coordinate volunteer attorneys through the District 10 Pro Bono Project says some limited free assistance from a lawyer could have a positive impact on cases in Lawrence County, especially in the area of family law.
Lawrence Superior Court I Judge Michael Robbins, a board member of the District 10 Pro Bono Project, and program coordinator Diane Walker successfully applied for a State Court Administration Grant, so there is no cost to Lawrence County
Robbins says the aim of the program is to provide limited, immediate legal advice and help with forms to those who do not have an attorney.
"We always see so much need, especially in family law, where people either cannot afford or do not yet have an attorney, and are really struggling in court or with legal documents," Polit added. "Sometimes just a little guidance and assistance with forms can help the family tremendously, and also help court go more smoothly for everybody."
The program, Counsel in the Court, is on the first and third Thursdays each month from 1-3:30 p.m. at Courthouse Plaza, 918 16th St. in Judge Robbins' court.
Polit praised the local lawyers who volunteer their time as the programs backbone.
"The heart of the program will be local attorneys who volunteer their time and commitment to give brief legal advice and help with drafting documents to citizens who would otherwise not have any advice before going to court," she added.
