(BEDFORD) - Plan Director Dan Kirk says the new Denny's Restaurant on James Avenue is near completion and should open in about three weeks.
He also says both Burger King and Bob Evans are planning cosmetic improvements to their eating establishments, and Tomcat's, on Mitchell Road, is in the final stage of its remodeling project.
GM Bedford Casting has finished its $2.5 million remodeling project and is in the process of installing equipment. He also thanked GM officials for addressing a road issue on GM Drive. GM paid approximately $3,000 to fix the road.
He noted progress is evident at the old pallet plant along John Williams Boulevard. Jay McCullough purchased the property and is remodeling the structure to accommodate a steel fabrication tool-and-die plant. It is targeted to open sometime next spring.
He said Ronnie Ryan is preparing to build a duplex in the 2500 block of Q Street, and Paul Bender is finalizing renovation of a building on his Brock Lane property. Kirk said the building likely will be used to host parties, gatherings and other assemblies.
Kirk said city leaders were busy formulating plans for Harp Commons, an anchor of the city's downtown revitalization plan.
Earlier this year, the city acquired the pocket park via a property exchange with Bedford Revitalization Inc. The city, BRI and Helix Technologies, secured a $50,000 grant to revitalize Harp Commons, the small pocket park along J Street on the downtown square.
Plans for the Stalker School Apartment project, spearheaded by Hoosier Uplands, have been amended. The original concept was 21 apartments at a cost of just more than $5 million. The plan now calls for 18 apartments at $3.5 million.
Work on the FMC Medical Building, under construction near Great Escape, was slowed when a wind storm blew down the trusses. Kirk said the contractor is waiting for the new trusses to arrive.
During the meeting, the commission approved Jim Deckard's request to build four duplexes at the corner of Seventh and I streets.
