College Mall Road To Close For Sewer Pipe Repair

Last updated on Monday, October 22, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - The discovery of a storm sewer failure underneath College Mall Road requires immediate construction starting Monday.

The pipe was found while Indiana Department of Transportation contractors were working on the construction of the State Road 45/46 Bypass info line project.

The 48-inch sewage pipe running under College Mall Road and Third Street needs replaced.

"The storm pipe is a major pipe working beneath the street," said John Callahan, public relations specialist with Bloomington's Utilities Department. "It has just deteriorated over time, which caused the failure."

The road will be closed for a week if the weather permits the construction to continue and all goes as planned, said Will Wingfield from the Office of Communications of the Indiana Department of Transportation.

"It was not anticipated," Wingfield said. "With construction going on already, we did not want to rip the new road to fix the sewer later."

With its discovery, the construction workers will close College Mall Road and provide a detour through Third Street and Woodcrest Drive, Wingfield said

Proper drainage of the pipe will be guaranteed in the future, and all lanes of traffic will return following immediate repair, according to a press release.

"The detour will be managed by construction workers, but we encourage people to determine which works best beforehand," Wingfield said.
