(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police officer Ben Burns was treated and released from the hospital after he lost control of his patrol car early Saturday morning.
Burns was on his way to a possible home burglary in the 600 block of South Woodlawn Avenue.
According to Bloomington Lt. Faron Lake, at 5:30 a.m., Officer Burns was driving the Crown Victoria west on East Third Street and with his lights and sirens activated passed a vehicle and attempted to avoid striking a concrete median on East Third Street when he lost control of the car.
The patrol car traveled into the yard of the Bloomington Fire Department's station at the corner of Third and Jefferson, struck and damaged the corner of a limestone sign for the station.
The car continued through the fire station's yard and crossed Jefferson Street. The patrol car came to a stop on the west side of Jefferson Street in a yard, after the car took out a fire hydrant.
Burns was wearing his seatbelt and the car's airbag deployed. Burns complained of back pain and was taken by ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital where he was treated and released.
Lake says the accident is still under investigation.
Other officers were sent to the report of the possible home burglary on South Woodlawn Avenue.
A woman told police she heard footsteps in her basement and thought someone had broken into her home. When officers checked her house, they found no evidence of a break-in, Lake said.
