Beech Grove Cemetery Tour Sunday

Last updated on Monday, October 1, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Anyone who missed the historic re-enactors this summer at the Green Hill Cemetery tombstone tour will be afforded a second chance to take a stroll down memory lane.

Eleven local thespians will perform at Beech Grove Cemetery Sunday from 2-6 p.m., relating stories of some of the area's more legendary characters.

The Historic Preservation Committee will sponsor the event. Tickets are $5.

"The tour we did in June at Green Hill was so popular that people asked us to do another one in the fall," explained Marla Jones.

Although Beech Grove is a smaller cemetery than Green Hill, it is just as old, and Jones said the committee was able to uncover stories just as intriguing as those interpreted in the earlier tour.

Emily Engstrom, committee chair, did most of the research. She noted this tour includes characters ranging from one of John Dillinger's gang, to a missionary who served in Africa most of her life.

"We have a wide variety of people represented, from one of the early members of the American War Mothers, to a young man who moved Native Americans out of Ohio before becoming a wealthy resort owner here in Lawrence County," Engstrom said. "It was fascinating to see all the amazing things the people in our community have done."

Parking is available at Thornton Park behind Lowery Pool. Light refreshments will be served at the Thornton Park Pavilion. For more information, call 278-0139.
