(LEESVILLE) - 22-year-old Devon J. Holmes, of Bedford, was killed this morning in a one-vehicle accident on Devil's Backbone Road.

According to a Lawrence County Police Officer Chris Roberts, Holmes was killed after his 2004 Ford Ranger left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

The accident happened around 5 a.m. about 1,000 feet from Dennison Schoolhouse Road.

Roberts says the Ranger appeared to have gone off the south side of the road. It then came back onto the road for about 150 feet before going off the north side of the road and hit a tree. Roberts is not sure why the vehicle went off the roadway.

Holmes was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report. Both of the truck's air bags deployed. Holmes was trapped in the truck.

The Lawrence County Police Department was assisted at the scene by Guthrie Township Volunteer Fire Department, Bedford Fire Department and Indiana University Health Bedford ambulance.
