Washington's Overhead Bridge Is a Concern

Last updated on Sunday, September 16, 2012

(WASHINGTON) - The Daviess County Commissioners County Highway Superintendent Phil Cornelius and County Attorney Grant Swartzentruber reported on the negotiations over the 15th Street overhead bridge in Washington.

The bridge has damage to the support structure and has had a 5 ton load limit for several years.

The bridge is owned by CSX Railroad but is a public thoroughfare and all bridges in the county fall under the jurisdiction of the Commissioners.

Cornelius reported that a recent traffic survey of the bridge found 1000 vehicles per day use the bridge.

What concerned the commissioners was the fact that the survey found busses and at least two semis were using the bridge despite the posted 5 ton weight limit.

Commission President Tony Wichman expressed his concern about the types of vehicles using the bridge, saying that even a two-and-a-half-ton truck is too heavy for the bridge. Cornelius remarked the limit was on the bridge for a reason.
