Speed Factor In Monday Crash

Last updated on Sunday, September 30, 2012

Stephanie Taylor Ferriell, of the Leader-Democrat reports, speed is being cited as a contributing factor in a Monday afternoon crash which resulted in the two teens involved being flown by air ambulances to Louisville hospitals.

Deputy Brad Naugle of the Washington County Sheriff's Department listed speed as the primary cause of the crash in his report.

The car struck both a utility pole and fence; the impact utterly demolished the vehicle, a green 1997 Nissan Maxima. The car was ripped apart and so badly damaged it took emergency responders a while to determine what type it was.

Zachary C. Adams, 17, 6839 William Knob, Borden, was driving north on South Eastern School Road when he lost control of the vehicle. With him was Katlyn Stewart, 15, 2418 E. Bethel Rd., Pekin.

Adams ran off the east side of the road, striking a utility pole with the passenger side, just behind the passenger door. The vehicle then continued on, striking a wooden fence with the driver's side.

The teens were wearing seat belts, preventing them from being ejected. "It's a good thing they were wearing seat belts, no doubt about that," said Sheriff Claude Combs. "If not, they would've been ejected and their injuries would've been much more severe than what they were."

Responding to the scene were the sheriff's department, Washington County Ambulance Service, the Salem Fire Department and members of the Pierce-Polk Volunteer Fire Department.

The crash was reported at 3:26 p.m. and occurred at Crystal Lake.

Given the severity of the crash, the teens' injuries were not terribly serious. Combs said he understood Adams was released from the hospital Tuesday and Stewart was to be released Wednesday.
