Skillman Awards South Lawrence Utilities $500,000 Grant

Last updated on Saturday, September 22, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Lt. Governor Becky Skillman awarded a $500,000 Community Focus Fund (CFF) grant to Lawrence County on behalf of South Lawrence Utilities Inc. to fund a water systems improvement project.

Thirty-eight communities were recognized Friday during a statehouse ceremony, with grant awards totaling more than $16 million.

The grant will fund a water systems improvement project. The project consists of replacing the current 100,000 gallon storage tank with a 200,000 gal tank, replacing 700 feet of water main, two valves and installing a new fire hydrant. The project will address the water pressure issues in the system.

"The CFF grants aid our smaller cities and towns with their community improvement needs," said Lt. Governor Skillman. "Upgrades in infrastructure, safety or utilities make our smaller communities more competitive in attracting residents as well as new businesses."

The CFF grants are administered by the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. These grants are federally funded through the Community Development Block Grant program. The CFFs are awarded annually through a competitive application process.

Eligible projects include, but are not limited to: community and senior centers, special needs facilities, libraries, water system improvements, storm drainage projects and sewer system improvements.
