Simmons To Sentenced To 132 Years In Prison

Last updated on Saturday, September 15, 2012

(MARTINSVILLE) - A Morgan County man found guilty of attempted murder following a three-hour standoff has been sentenced to 132 years in prison.

Richard Simmons was convicted of attempted murder, criminal recklessness, unlawful use of body armor and possession of marijuana back in August.

In November, Simmons was at the center of a standoff near Martinsville after officers arrived to serve him with warrants for identity theft and burglary. Simmons responded by shooting at police.

Four officers came under heavy fire and were pinned down inside the home until SWAT members captured Simmons, who was shot twice during the standoff. He wasn't seriously hurt because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
At the time, investigators said officers were "outgunned" and said the situation "could've been a lot worse."
