(MITCHELL) - Pro Tree Care will be cutting down seven trees in Mitchell. The Mitchell Board of Works reviewed three bids for tree removal in preparation for the sidewalk upgrade project along Hancock Avenue and 12th Street.
In 2009, Mitchell received $250,000 to build sidewalks through the Indiana Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School program.
Krystal Shetler of the Times-Mail reports that the plan is to construct sidewalks along Hancock Avenue from Burris Elementary School to the railroad tracks near Seventh Street and on 12th Street, from Hancock Avenue to Brook Street.
The city received bids from Pro Tree Care, Lonnie Graves and Affordable Tree Trimming. Pro Tree Care came in at $1,100 to take down all seven trees.
The two other local firms submitted bids around $1,800. Mayor Pruett says Pro Tree Care will cut down the trees and grind down the stumps, city crews will haul off and mulch the debris.
Pruett says the bid-letting process for the sidewalks is being pushed back to January, instead of December. That's because he learned the sidewalks don't have to be 6 feet wide. Instead, they can be 5 feet wide, thereby saving the city money in constructing the walkways. Engineers will re-drawing and re-submit plans with 5-feet-wide sidewalks.
