(FREETOWN) - Jackson County police continue to investigate an alleged scam involving a pair of men posing as tree trimmers that was reported earlier this week in far eastern Jackson County.
Sheriff Michael Carothers said the incident was reported to the sheriff's department Monday afternoon by a woman living in the 12300 block of East U.S. 50.
He said the scam involved two men who took money from the woman to top a tree on Saturday. The men left and never returned.
The men gave the woman a business card, which listed the name of Elite Tree Service.
A business by that name is owned by Ron Zike, who lives in the Freetown area. Zike's wife, Michelle, said Wednesday the business card shown to the woman is an old one her husband no longer uses.
Carothers said he has assigned Officer Rob Henley to investigate the incident, which is the only report the department had received as of Wednesday afternoon.
Carothers said people should be careful about giving anyone money for work until the job is completed.
The Indiana Better Business Bureau reported last month it expects door-to-door scams to double in the Hoosier state this year. It had received more than 1,000 complaints about such scams through Aug. 1. It received 1,300 complaints total last year.
