(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich) - Jack Jacqmain, who fatally stabbed the son-in-law of a former Bedford man, was sentenced Monday to 40-80 years in prison.
(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich) - Jack Jacqmain, who fatally stabbed the son-in-law of a former Bedford man, was sentenced Monday to 40-80 years in prison.
Roger Moon, of the Times-Mail reports, Jacqmain was found guilty of killing 31-year-old Mark Moore, whose wife Jarrin is the daughter of former Times-Mail managing editor and reporter Jeff Hauersperger and his wife, Leeann. The Hauerspergers now live in Martinsville, where Jeff is a minister.
54-year-old Jacqmain, was sentenced by Judge James Redford in Kent County Michigan's 17th Circuit Court. Jacqmain had pleaded no contest but mentally ill to second-degree murder. Although, after a number of tries, he had been found competent to stand trial, he waived that right.
Jeff Hauersperger says Jacqmain will not be eligible for parole for 40 years, which essentially translates into a life sentence. Hauersperger also said the sentencing brings "much-needed closure" for Moore's widow and the rest of his family.
Moore was killed at a Motel 6 in Walker, Mich., on August 18, 2010.
At the time of his death, Moore was in west Michigan working for a cable television contractor. He and Jarrin and their daughter, Kiley, who was 5 years old when her father died, lived in Indianapolis.
The Grand Rapids Press reported at the time that Moore and Jacqmain were strangers, and there was no conflict.
The Press also reported that Jacqmain was a convicted bank robber with a history of mental illness. Jacqmain had walked away from a medical facility where he was under in-patient care, a day before the stabbing.
A week-long manhunt followed Moore's death. Jacqmain was arrested without incident after being found sleeping behind a convenience store in Florissant, Mo.
According to the Press, Jacqmain was paroled from prison in 2009 after serving 17 years for a 1992 bank robbery in Grand Raids. The ex-Marine was 35 when he robbed an Old Kent Bank branch while armed with a sawed-off shotgun. His attorney at the time says he was hearing voices and acting on those suggestions when he passed a threatening note to a teller. According to court records, Jacqmain was over-medicated and suffering from bouts with schizophrenia.
