(BEDFORD) - As of Tuesday afternoon there were 83 parcels still on the block for today’s tax sale, with $121,661 owed on the properties.
Lawrence County Auditor Billie Tumey says that number will be smaller when the tax sale starts with registration at 9 a.m. The sale will begin at 10 a.m. in the Lawrence County Courthouse lobby.
The amount of property taxes owed will be the starting bid.
Tumey says the winning bidder receives a tax lien, not a deed.
The original property owner has a year to pay the back taxes, plus costs and interests to the lien holder, in order to get the property back. Plues SRI Inc, the company that runs the sale, charges a a $75 fee for selling the property. The county assesses $25 for the cost of the mailing, notices and related expenses.
If the owner does not pay, the lien holder can then get a deed to the property.
Property is placed in the tax sale, if a person is at least three payments behind on taxes.
Tumey says property owners, who were delinquent, received by certified mail. But she added some owners could not be notified. The properties in the tax sale were published in the Times-Mail, as required by state law.
The law requires counties to hold a tax sale once a year.
