(CROTHERSVILLE) - A Jackson County man has been indicted in a pair of bank robberies in April.
36-year-old Billy Joe Dugard, of Crothersville, faces two counts of bank robbery in connection with the indictment issued Aug. 30 by a grand jury with the New Albany Division of U.S. District Court, Southern District of Indiana.
Aubrey Woods, of The Tribune reports, according to the indictment Dugard, entered the Scott County Bank branch in Scottsburg on April 24 and presented a note to a teller demanding money. He fled after being given cash.
Dugard also is accused of entering a PNC bank branch in Pekin on April 30 and presenting a teller with a note demanding money. He then fled that bank after receiving the cash.
U.S. District Attorney Joseph H. Hogsett says there is no evidence that Dugard was involved in any bank robbery in Seymour or Jackson County.
Seymour police have investigated three bank robberies this year, one in March and two in June. The June robberies have been solved, but the one in March remains under investigation.
Hogsett said Dugard's arrest came as part of the U.S. Attorney's Violent Crime Initiative and was a result of collaborative investigative efforts by the FBI, the U.S. Marshal Service and the Indiana State Police. Several local departments, including Scottsburg Police Department, Washington County Sheriff's Department and Pekin Police Department, assisted.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren M. Wheatley, who is prosecuting the case, said Dugard could face a maximum of 20 years in prison and $250,000 fine.
He also faces the possible forfeiture of his property as well as $2,384 police found in his possession on May 2.
Dugard's initial hearing will be scheduled by a U.S. Magistrate Judge in New Albany.
A check with Jackson County Sheriff's Department shows Dugard has an outstanding warrant here charging him with driving while suspended and two counts of resisting law enforcement, according to Jackson County Jail records. That warrant was issued March 22.
