(BEDFORD) -A former North Lawrence Career Center teacher and coach David Yeary is being investigated on allegations of inappropriate contact with two former students.
School officials say Yeary is no longer allowed on school grounds.
Mike Lewis, of the Times-Mail reports, shool leaders also are asking that his teaching license and sports officiating certification be "permanently revoked." They also have notified the Department of Child Services and have turned over information to the Lawrence County prosecutor's office for review.
The school's attorney Greg Pittman issued a public statement during Thursday's North Lawrence School board meeting.
In addition to being a coach and official, Yeary had worked for years as a full-time teacher at the North Lawrence Career Center.
In May, he was transferred to a new role of working half-time at the career center and half-time as BNL expulsion program supervisor.
During a meeting Aug. 10, board members accepted Yeary's retirement, effective the end of that day, without comment.
According to the statement, administrators learned just before the start of this school year that Yeary "had inappropriate contact and communication with a former student." Yeary was "provided an option to sever his employment with North Lawrence Community Schools or be terminated. He voluntarily chose to sever his employment with NLCS. The incident was immediately reported to the Department of Child Services."
After Yeary had retired, administrators were "contacted and informed by a former student that over 16 years ago David Yeary had an inappropriate relationship with her" when he served as a teacher and coach. "As a result of an immediate internal investigation by administrative personnel, Dave Yeary confessed to having had an inappropriate relationship with the former student during the time he was a teacher and coach."
The statement reports "a full disclosure of information is being provided to the Lawrence County prosecuting attorney's office for their review and assessment to determine available legal options.
