Eleven Seek Persimmon Festival Queen Crown

(MITCHELL) - The 2012 Persimmon Festival Queen contest will be Sept. 24. The afternoon judging will take place at 4:30 p.m. at the Mitchell High School Auditorium and the queen will be crowned in an 8 p.m. ceremony on the Main Street stage.

There is a $2 fee to attend the afternoon session, but the coronation ceremony is free to the public.

Eleven young women are seeking the title, according to chairwoman Kim Powell.

The contestants are:

Burgandi Renee Baldwin

Burgandi is the daughter of Twila and Eddie Baldwin. She is a sophomore at MHS.

She likes to fish, hang with her friends, ride four-wheelers, go mudding, ride horses and doing math.

She is sponsored by Furniture World in Mitchell.

Brittany Nicole Blanton

Brittany is the daughter of Jeremy and Amanda Blanton and Kacey Thompson. She is a senior at MHS.

She is a member of the Art Club, SADD, Fresh Start, Tri-Hi-Y, Pep Club, Exploratory Teaching, Cheerleading and gymnastics.

She works at Flippin' Out Gymnastics.

Brittany was best jumper at the 2012 UCA cheer camp.

She plans to attend Indiana University and study pediatrics and try out for the cheer squad.

Her sponsor is Flippin' Out Gymnastics in Mitchell.

Mariah Caitlyn Chastain

Mariah is the daughter of Taleea L. Yeary and Matthew D. Chastain. She is a senior at MHS.

She enjoys painting, reading science fiction and studying animal medicine.

She participates in Key Club, Tri-Hi-Y and Science Club. She attended Hoosier Girls State.

She loves wild animal prints and neon colors.

Mariah loves to roller skate to pop music and loves 1980s rock bands.

Three Hearts Floral & Gifts is her sponsor.

Burgandy Eagans

Burgandy is the daughter of Jamie Floyd and is a junior at MHS.

She enjoys exercising, including bike riding and running. She likes to read, and once read the entire dictionary.

She enjoys spending time with her family and boyfriend.

She is a member of Spanish Club and is on the Academic Team.

Burgandy enjoys helping at her church, Woodville Baptist, and participates in the youth group and praise team.

She plans to go to college and become a private investigator.

She is sponsored by Mitchell Manor.

Carlye Jean Goodman

Carlye is the daughter of Sara and Jim Goodman and is a junior at MHS.

She swims for Lawrence County Aquatics and plays soccer for MHS. She was a lifeguard at the Mitchell City Pool this summer.

She was in band for four years and is taking piano lessons outside of school. She also is a member of the Art Club.

She is sponsored by J. Smith Photography.

Addyson Marie Hardman

Addyson is the daughter of Mat and Cheryl Hardman and is a senior at MHS.

She has been active in cheer for seven years. Last year she also participated on the MHS dance team.

She is a lifeguard at the Mitchell City Pool, where she loves teaching young children how to swim.

This year she is serving as a cadet teacher in her mother's kindergarten class.

Addyson is vice president of her class and also is a member of Student Council, Art Club and Spanish Club.

After graduation she plans to go to college and pursue combining her passion for art with her desire to help people.

She enjoys hanging out with her friends and family.

Her sponsor is Doodle Bug Preschool in Mitchell.

Alexis Nichole Jeffries

Alexis is the daughter of Jennifer Taflinger and Dave Garrison. She is a junior at Mitchell High School.

She enjoys gymnastics, hanging out with friends and managing MHS football. She is also a member of the Mitchell SADD Chapter.

She is sponsored by Knowles Trucking of Mitchell.

Sarah Marie Johnson

Sarah is the daughter of Jason and Christina Johnson and is a senior at MHS.

She enjoys being active in her school and community. She is a member of the girls basketball team, manages the football team, and is a member of many clubs, including M Club, Spanish Club, Tri-Hi-Y, SADD and Student Council. She is also a Fresh Start peer leader.

After school, Sarah plans to attend college and major in radiology.

She enjoys camping, fishing and spending time with family.

H&R Block (Karen Premo) of Mitchell and French Lick is her sponsor.

Jenna Nachole Wade

Jenna is the daughter of Kelly and Michele Wade and is a senior at MHS.

She is a nine-year 4-H member, a football manager and is a member of Fresh Start, Key Club, Student Council, Art Club and Spanish Club. She also is the editor of the Orbit.
She enjoys hanging out with friends and family.

Kelly Wade, Farm Bureau Insurance, is her sponsor.

Abbie Nicola White

Abbie is the daughter of Katonya White and is a junior at MHS.

She likes to spend time with her friends and family and enjoys playing basketball and taking pictures.

She has been in Girl Scouts since kindergarten and joined the MHS SADD chapter this year.

She enjoys the Persimmon Festival because it also marks her birthday week. The festival helps to get her friends and family together.

She is sponsored by Jim Orr Auto Sales of Mitchell.

Kalyn Brooke White

Kalyn is the daughter of Kim Manning and is a senior at MHS.

She is a member of the girls varsity golf team. She participates in SADD and has helped build floats for the Persimmon Festival.

She has participated in 4-H showing beef cattle, sheep and photography. She is a third-year member of Junior Leaders, where she also volunteers.

Phi Beta Psi Sorority is her sponsor.
