(DUBOIS) - Lance Corporal Alec Terwiske of Dubois has been killed in action in Afghanistan.
The 21-year-old Marine killed in a minesweeping operation reportedly in the Helmand Province of southern Afghanistan.
According to the Defense Department in Washington, Lance Corporal Terwiske was in the gunner's chair of the vehicle with other members of his mobile assault company when it struck a roadside bomb.
The explosion caused the vehicle to overturn on top of Terwiske. He was pronounced dead later at a U. S. Military medical facility. Another marine was also killed by the explosion.
Terwiske had volunteered to be the gunner on the minesweeping operation. The gunner is seated on the outside of the vehicle. Unconfirmed reports say that the 21-year-old Marine was killed by the roadside bomb as he was serving in a mobile assault company.
The news was delivered to his parents Alan and Sandy Terwiske on Monday. He was a graduate of Northeast Dubois High School.
Terwiske joined the Marines in 2010 and left for Afghanistan in April on his first tour of duty.
Terwiske joins Corporal Eric Lueken as the second Marine killed in action overseas. Lueken is also from Dubois and was in Iraq at the time of his death in 2006.
