(MORGAN-MONROE FOREST) - On October 6, 2012 Indiana Conservation Officers will be hosting a tree stand safety workshop at Morgan-Monroe State Forest.
Tree stand accidents account for the overwhelming majority of hunting related injuries and deaths. During the past two deer hunting seasons in Indiana, nearly 30 tree stand accidents were reported statewide.
Most resulted in serious injury and two hunters died from their falls. Safe hunting practices and the proper use of a full-body harness could have prevented these life changing incidents.
Several conservation officers will be on hand to discuss and demonstrate the safe use of the most common tree stands including lock-on type, climbing stands, and ladder stands.
Officers will also demonstrate how to safely raise and lower a weapon while hunting from an elevated platform.
Participants will have the opportunity to "test drive" different types of tree stands and safety harnesses.
The goal of the workshop is to eliminate tree stand related injuries and deaths involving Indiana deer hunters.
There have been many changes to Indiana's deer hunting laws and rules for the upcoming 2012-2013 deer seasons and conservation officers will available to answer questions and provide clarification during the workshop.
The workshop will be held at the Byrant's Creek Shelterhouse at Morgan-Monroe State Forest. Hours are from 11am until 3 pm. Bryant's Creek Shelterhouse is the first shelterhouse on the right as you enter Morgan Monroe State Forest off of old 37.
