Brownstown Has Walking Trail

Last updated on Saturday, September 1, 2012

(BROWNSTOWN) - Brownstown residents will have a new place to walk next week as construction of a new multi-use trail comes to an end.

Jessica Squires, of the Tribune reports, last year Brownstown/Ewing Main Street proposed to the local chamber of commerce that the community enter a competition for the Indianapolis 500 Community of the Year 2011.

Brownstown won the Back Home Again in Indiana contest and the result of that is a multiuse trail built on county-owned property just east of town.

Because the competition was part of the Indianapolis 500's celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Chamber of Commerce asked residents to submit a picture of 100 of something. They received pictures of 100 pennies, 100 fingers and even 100 veterans.
The community also decked out buildings, fences and lawns in racing garb as part of its entry.

The win brought $25,000 to Brownstown to build a walking trail.

Funding the project continued through this year with community contributions, some going to sponsor bricks for the beginning of the walkway and benches along the path.

Construction began this week on the path that will follow nine-tenths of a mile from County Park, along Walnut Street to County Road 25 East and south to the fairgrounds.
