Last updated on Thursday, September 13, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - IU Police were alerted to a possible missing student at 12:40 a.m. Sunday at Teter Quad.

ISD reports, a female student lost her phone. The person who found it texted the student's mother and claimed the girl was in trouble.

The mother reported the student missing to the IU Police Department.

The text turned out to be a false alarm. IU Police Chief Keith Cash says whoever sent the text message thought that it was a joke and funny, but Cash says the person could be charged with false informing

Police had no way to know the girl wasn't missing and spent hours using multiple resources to search for the student.
