Young Boys Start Barn Fire After Playing With Lighters And Gas

Last updated on Monday, August 20, 2012

(JUDAH) - Two young boys were responsible for setting fire to a shed on Pumpkin Road Sunday.

Pumpkin Road is in a subdivisions off Guthrie Road in Judah. The building is owned by Mark Kreitzer.

According to Marshall Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chad Hayes the boys were lucky they were not injured.

"The two boys, ages 10 and 11-years-old were playing with a lighter and setting gasoline on fire," Hayes says. "The fire got out of control and they tried to put it out and that is when it spread to the hay bales in the out building."

Firefighters from Marshall, Oolitic and Perry VFDs responded.

Hayes says the fire destroyed numerous hay bales and a 1987 Chevrolet half-ton pickup truck parked inside the building.

"Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze quickly," Hayes says. "They were on the scene about two hours, doing clean up and checking for hot spots and investigating the cause of the blaze."

The two boys admitted to playing with lighters and gasoline.

"We talked to the boys at length yesterday, stressing the dangers of playing with lighters, but especially the danger of adding gasoline or any other flammable liquid," Hayes says. "We were so lucky they were not injured."

Hayes says the boy's parents have made arrangements with Kreitzer to make restitution for the damages.

"Mr. Kreitzer valued the truck at 1,000 and the building and hay at 1,000, so total damages are $2,000 dollars," Hayes added.
