According to police Chaplin was traveling on State Road 64, just east of Birdseye when for some unknown reason drove his 2001 Ford Focus ran off of the road. Chaplin overcorrected which sent his car back off of the right side of the road where it struck a drainage culvert with the left front of his vehicle. After the impact, the vehicle overturned and came to rest in a ditch.
The car caught fire but was quickly extinguished by motorists who stopped to assist. Chaplin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chaplin was wearing his seatbelt, but according to investigators at the scene, the belt failed to restrain Chaplin due to being inoperable from a previous accident.
