(BEDFORD) - North Lawrence Community Schools got off to a good start Tuesday, even though a couple of juveniles tried let the air out of the tires of several buses parked at BNL High School.
The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department received a call at 11:57 p.m. Monday reporting two juveniles were deflating tires on the buses.
The two fled on foot and headed in different directions when police arrived. Police will make extra patrols at the schools.
Transportation Director Darren Waggoner says the vandals deflated the tires on about a dozen buses. A school employee was called in around 3 a.m. to inflate the tires.
Waggoner says most of the buses parked at the high school are owned by the school corporation, but a few are contractor-owned buses and were among those targeted by the vandals.
Superintendent Dennis Turner says some 5,300 North Lawrence students reported for class Tuesday morning, with early indications showing no hitches after the bus tires were aired up.
Roughly 1,900 students reported to school in Mitchell on Monday. Mitchell Superintendent Steve Phillips says the day went smoothly.
