Last updated on Friday, August 10, 2012

(SALEM) - A Salem man was injured when he crashed a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle Thursday.

Shane William Smith, 25, 2861 E. Banet Rd., told Deputy Larry Motsinger he swerved when a small animal ran in front on him on Martinsburg Road.

He lost control and was thrown from the bike, sustaining a severe head laceration, other lacerations and road rash. Smith was cited for not wearing a helmet, a requirement for those with a learner's permit.

The Harley belonged to his father, Randy R. Smith, 2929 E. Banet Rd. The younger Smith had just left his dad's home prior to the crash.

He was transported to Floyd Memorial Hospital for treatment.
