(UNDATED) - Several vehicles were broken into Monday in Bedford, outside of the city limits and Mitchell.

"This is an on-going problem," says Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley. "We cannot stress enough that residents need to lock their vehicles."

The break-ins were on the 400 block of Victorian Road, 600 block of Liberty Drive, 300 block of 19th Street, 100 block of Parkwood Drive, 3200 block of Riverbluff Road and 1800 block of H Street.

In the county, vehicles were burglarized on Brick Street and Glendale Way.

In Mitchell, thieves took $40 in cash and stole a blue Roadmaster bike from a home in the 400 block of Knotts Street.

Sheriff Sam Craig says if residents are not going to lock their vehicles, they need to keep items out of plain sight or locked in glove boxes or trunks.

"The best practice is just to lock the doors when getting out of the vehicle," Craig says. "And don't keep any valuables in the vehicles. If someone sees something of value sometimes they will smash in a window to retrieve the item."

Parsley says his officers have only investigated one case, where items were stolen from a locked vehicle.

"That was a smash and grab," he added. "They busted the window and took items. But all of the other vehicles this summer, were just left unlocked."

The criminals took change, cigarettes, GPS devices, CDs, Ipods and other small items this summer.

"But if residents lock the doors and keep valuables in the trunk, many times the criminals will just walk by if they don't see valuables in the vehicle," Craig says. "And if any one sees suspicious activity or someone attempting to get into a vehicle they should call police."

Anyone with information about the current break-ins should call police.
