Mother Of Scalded Infant Faces Charges

Last updated on Wednesday, August 8, 2012

(MORGANTOWN) - A mother is facing neglect charges after police said she waited three days to bring her scalded 8-month-old baby to the hospital.

Kelly Hampton, 32, of Morgantown, was arrested on preliminary charges of neglect resulting in injury after police said her story about how her baby was burned did not add up.

Hampton told police she was giving two children a bath and turned the water to hot after becoming distracted when a third child came into the bathroom.

But police said another child said he was bathing the baby and accidentally turned the water to hot, while Hampton and her husband were in a bedroom with the door shut.

Hampton told police she did not take the baby to the hospital right away because she thought she could treat the burns herself.

Hospital workers called police and child services upon seeing the baby's serious burns.

Hampton is out of jail on bond.
