(MITCHELL) - Mitchell Mayor Gary Pruett says the city will begin excepting bids on December 12th for the sideway upgrade along Hancock Avenue.
Krystal Shetler of the Times-Mail reports that in 2009, the city of Mitchell received $250,000 to build sidewalks through the Indiana Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School program. The plan is to construct sidewalks along Hancock Avenue from Burris Elementary School to the railroad tracks near Seventh Street and on 12th Street, from Hancock Avenue to Brook Street. The city was granted easements by property owners along the route and it's currently getting bids to remove seven trees that will be in the way of construction.
Mitchell Clerk-treasurer George James said the city's match on the project will be proposed in the 2013 budget because that's when the money will actually be spent.
Street Commissioner Larry Harris has met with engineers to inventory the city's needs in terms of sidewalks, curbs, buildings and parks. The money will be spent out of the city's Rainy Day Fund, James said, with an additional appropriation covering the rest of the cost. The city must have the inventory done within 30 days, then the engineers will draw up the plan, which must be submitted by the end of the year.
Officials are moving ahead with the plan that will eventually bring the city into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The board approved spending nearly $38,000 to have first group engineers of Indianapolis create a proposal on how the city will comply with the law.
