(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County needs about 43,000 signs to meet a new federal mandate.
According to Highway Department Superintendent David Holmes, there are approximately 38,000 signs currently up in the county.
The sign inventory was done by Butler, Fairman & Seufert Civil Engineers.
According to the report, there are several street and stop signs that are missing or down and will need to be replaced.
All the signs will have to meet new federal standards and have reflective lettering.
The government will pay 90 precent of the cost to replace the signs and the county will be held responsible for the other 10 percent.
Holmes estimates the total cost of the project to be around $550,000.
According to the Federal Highway Administration the county must have a sign replacement plan in effect by January 2013.
Laura Slusher of the Indiana Local Technical Assistant Program recommended the county to compete for a $100,000 sign upgrade to complete the project.
The county has seven years to complete the sign replacements, which according to federal guidelines needs to be done by the end of 2018.
